- 12:00 : Kate Pugh will introduce the core goals of the program, the residency, and the Foundation (4300) course. We’ll ask, “What is knowledge?” “Who are knowledge workers?” “What’s the knowledge-based, as opposed to resource-based, view of the firm?”
- 1:00 – 1:45: Lunch
- 1:45 – 2:45 : Team Exercise. “Knowledge Jam”. We’ll introduce the IKNS “eyeballs” (Information Management and Collaboration disciplines), and explore how you, as IKNS student, will differentiate yourself by having a command of not only tangible explicit, structured, and unstructured knowledge (for decision-making, process excellence, product), but also tacit and collective knowledge (the messy territory of identity, engagement and behavioral change).
- 2:45 – 3:45: Team Exercise. ” Knowledge Jam”. We will do a fun tower-building exercise to do some creative collaboration, and get you to think about how tacit knowledge capture is not what it seems.
- [3:45 – 4:15 BREAK]
- 4:15 – 5:15 : Michael Fleming and Erik Nelsen (both of the Columbia online team) will talk about life in the hybrid environment, using the Canvas social learning tool by Instructure, using Adobe Connect for online live sessions, and balancing jobs, family and coursework.
- 5:15 – 6:15 :”What are knowledge products and services in today’s organizations” by Kate Pugh. + 3 case studies. You will be in teams of 5 or 6. The case studies are World Bank, Quimmco, and ConocoPhillips. Cases involve looking at the strategy of the organization through the strategy lens that you learn during residency, and making high level recommendations as to potential knowledge services or knowledge-driven products to pursue. You will have one hour set aside in each of the first four days to work on your cases, and you present on Sunday morning.
